Abortion Pill FAQs

What Is The Abortion Pill?
Abortion Pills are a pregnancy termination method also known as chemical or medication abortion. The FDA has approved the use of chemical abortion up to 10 weeks. If you are considering abortion, learn more about side effects, what to expect, restrictions, and recovery.
We can confirm the viability of your pregnancy with an ultrasound and determine how far along you are. While we do not provide or refer for abortion services, we provide answers and options so you can make a medically informed choice. Metro Women's Care serves women and families in Northern Virginia by providing services at no cost.
What Should I Do Before Getting Abortion Pills?
Before you consider getting abortion pills, it is important to confirm the following:
-
The location of the pregnancy (if it’s intrauterine or ectopic). Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus and is potentially life-threatening to a pregnant woman. Abortion pills do not end an ectopic pregnancy.
-
Viability of the pregnancy (able to continue on its own or if you are at risk of a miscarriage, which is a pregnancy that naturally ends on its own).
-
Your estimated due date or how far along you are.
-
Remove IUD if needed
-
Side effects, what to expect, and drugs used in the abortion pill regimen (to avoid potential allergic reactions or complications)
Other complications can occur, such as an overgrowth of the uterine lining, muscle pain or stiffness, and more. Contact 911 if you have complications from the abortion pill.
