My Partner Is Pressuring Me to Have an Abortion, but I’m Not Sure.

Facing an unexpected pregnancy is challenging, but feeling pressure from others to choose the outcome for your pregnancy can make it more difficult and confusing. No one has the right to pressure you into making a decision about your pregnancy.

Is My Partner Pressuring Me?

Pressure to abort might look different in some relationships. Some partners might directly pressure a pregnant woman by setting ultimatums. This might look like your partner saying they will leave or harm you if you continue the pregnancy. Others might indirectly pressure their pregnant partners, for example, suggesting that they aren’t sure they will want to be involved with the child if you choose to parent.

Regardless of the type of pressure used, it is never ok. Pressure might leave you feeling incapable of making this decision, but you CAN. And you have the right to make your decision without feeling pressured.

What Can You Do?

If you are feeling pressured by your partner to abort, here are some suggestions:

Set boundaries: Let your partner know that you will not be pushed into making a decision that makes you uncomfortable. Remind them that this is your decision to make.

Inform yourself: Get as much information as you can about your options to make a decision that leaves you with confidence. Knowing why you are choosing your option will help you assertively present your decision to your partner.

Get help: Sometimes, when partners feel strongly about their side in a disagreement, communication can break down. Seek help from a close friend, family member, or professional counselor to help you and your partner talk in a positive and productive way.

Give them time: Pregnancy can be overwhelming, and it might be difficult for your partner to see your side of things because of fear and other emotions that might be getting in the way. Allow your partner to process their feelings.

Stay safe: If your partner’s pressure makes you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. If you don’t know whom to contact for help, reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.
